- Ingredients
- Cookies:
- 3/4 Cup (175 ml) Shortening
- 1/4 Cup (60 ml) Butter
- 1-1/2 Cups (350 ml) Brown Sugar
- 2 Well Beaten Eggs
- 1/2 Cup (125 ml) Fresh Orange Juice
- 1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla
- 3-1/2 Cups (825 ml) Flour
- 1/4 tsp (1 ml) salt
- 2 tsp (10 ml) Baking Powder
- 1 tsp (5 ml) Baking Soda
- 2 Tbls Grated Orange Rind
- 3/4 Cup (175 ml) Sour Milk or Buttermilk
- 3 or more drops of Orange Oil (optional but good)
- 1 Cup (225 ml) Nuts (optional - I don't)
- Icing:
- 1/2 Cup (125 ml) Butter
- 4 Cups (950 ml) Powdered Sugar
- 1/2 Can Evaporated Milk
- 1 tsp (5 ml) Vanilla
- 2 Tbls Grated Orange Rind
- Preparation
- Cookies:
- Cream Shortening and Sugar.
- Add eggs, orange juice, orange rinds, orange oil, vanilla and sour milk/buttermilk. Mix well.
- Add all dry ingredients. Blend well.
- Drop by tsp on greased cookie sheet.
- Bake 350 degrees (175 C.) for 5 to 8 minutes
- Icing:
- Mix all ingredients with enough water to make icing consistancy.
- Ice completely cooled cookies.

- I wrote this recipe down in total darkness, in a
moving car about 30 years ago. I added a few
things (oil & buttermilk/sour milk exchange).
It always comes out great.
