A deep-fried Swiss pastry.

Serves/Makes:2 dozen (a guess)

Ingredients
  • 2 cups (475 ml) sifted flour
  • 3 tbsp (45 ml) sugar
  • 2 tbsp (30 ml) butter
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) milk
  • 2 tbsp (30 ml) seedless, raisins
  • 1-1/2 tsp (7 ml) baking powder
  • oil for deep frying
  • powdered sugar
Preparation
  • Sift the flour and sugar together into a bowl.
  • Cut in the butter with a pastry blender or two knives.
  • Add the egg and milk, mixing until well blended.
  • Add the raisins and baking powder and again mix well.
  • Shape a tbsp of the mixture into a horseshoe.
  • Heat oil in a deep saucepan to 360 degrees (175 C.).
  • Drop the horseshoes into it and fry until golden brown.
  • Drain and dust with powdered sugar.
  • These pastries may be eaten either hot or cold.
