- Ingredients
- 3/4 cup (175 ml) sugar
- 2 tbsp (30 ml) cornstarch
- 1/4 tsp (1 ml) salt
- 2 cups (475 ml) milk
- 2 slightly beaten egg yolks or 1 well-beaten egg
- 2 tbsp (30 ml) butter
- 1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla
- Preparation
- In saucepan, blend sugar, cornstarch and salt.
- Add milk.
- Cook and stir over medium heat until thick and bubbly.
- Remove from heat.
- Stir a small amount into egg.
- Stirring, slowly add egg mixture to pan.
- Cook and stir 2 more minutes.
- Remove from heat.
- Add butter and vanilla.
- Comments
- Variations:
Chocolate: Increase sugar to 1 c. Add 2 squares bitter baking chocolate along with milk.
Butterscotch: Substitute brown sugar for white. Increase butter to 3 T.
