Ingredients
  • 1 cup (225 ml) all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup (175 ml) sugar
  • 2 tbsp (30 ml). cocoa
  • 2 tsp (10 ml). baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp (2 ml). salt
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) milk
  • 2 tbsp (30 ml). melted butter
  • 1 tsp (5 ml). vanilla
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp (30 ml). cocoa
  • 1 cup (225 ml) hot, strong coffee
  • whipped cream, optional
Preparation
  • Spoon flour (not sifted) into dry measuring cup. Level off and pour measured flour into bowl.
  • Add sugar, cocoa, baking powder and salt to flour (not sifted); stir well to blend.
  • Add milk, butter and vanilla; mix well.
  • Spoon into a well-greased 8-inch square pan.
  • Combine brown sugar and cocoa; sprinkle evenly over batter.
  • Pour the cup of coffee over batter in pan.
  • Bake at 350 degrees (175 C.) for 25-30 minutes.
  • Serve warm with whipped cream, if desired.
Comments
This makes a great cake and doesn't need icing because a pudding forms in the bottom of the pan. My mom used to make this when I was a kid. We loved it.
