A hearty, old fashion beef stew recipe

Serves/Makes:6 to 8 servings

Ingredients
  • 1 lb (.5 kg). beef stew meat, cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 6 cups (1425 ml) water
  • 6 oz (168 grm). of bottled beer
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) flour
  • 1/2 tsp (2 ml) thyme
  • 1/2 tsp (2 ml) salt
  • 1/2 tsp (2 ml) pepper
  • 5 beef bouillon cubes
  • 5 large carrots, peeled and chopped 1 inch thick
  • 5 medium potatoes, peeled and chopped 1 inch thick
  • 1 large onion, roughly chopped
  • 1 slice bacon
  • 2 tbsp (30 ml) Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) corn starch
Preparation
  • Combined salt and pepper with flour, toss beef in flour.
  • Simmer bacon in large pot a few minutes turning a few times.
  • Add beef pieces and brown meat and all sides.
  • Add the rest of the ingredients except cornstarch.
  • Turn heat to low and simmer one hour.
  • Whisk cornstarch together with 1 cup (225 ml) water.
  • While stirring stew, slowly pour in cornstarch mixture until well bended.
  • Remove from heat, let cool ten minutes to thicken.
Comments
This stew is even better the next day. Pack leftovers for lunch. Recipe easily adjusts to feed large crowds in a hurry.
