Ingredients
  • Cookies:
  • 3/4 Cup (175 ml) Shortening
  • 1/4 Cup (60 ml) Butter
  • 1-1/2 Cups (350 ml) Brown Sugar
  • 2 Well Beaten Eggs
  • 1/2 Cup (125 ml) Fresh Orange Juice
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla
  • 3-1/2 Cups (825 ml) Flour
  • 1/4 tsp (1 ml) salt
  • 2 tsp (10 ml) Baking Powder
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) Baking Soda
  • 2 Tbls Grated Orange Rind
  • 3/4 Cup (175 ml) Sour Milk or Buttermilk
  • 3 or more drops of Orange Oil (optional but good)
  • 1 Cup (225 ml) Nuts (optional - I don't)
  • Icing:
  • 1/2 Cup (125 ml) Butter
  • 4 Cups (950 ml) Powdered Sugar
  • 1/2 Can Evaporated Milk
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) Vanilla
  • 2 Tbls Grated Orange Rind
Preparation
  • Cookies:
  • Cream Shortening and Sugar.
  • Add eggs, orange juice, orange rinds, orange oil, vanilla and sour milk/buttermilk. Mix well.
  • Add all dry ingredients. Blend well.
  • Drop by tsp on greased cookie sheet.
  • Bake 350 degrees (175 C.) for 5 to 8 minutes
  • Icing:
  • Mix all ingredients with enough water to make icing consistancy.
  • Ice completely cooled cookies.
Comments
I wrote this recipe down in total darkness, in a moving car about 30 years ago. I added a few things (oil & buttermilk/sour milk exchange). It always comes out great.
