Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) butter
  • 1 cup (225 ml) chopped onion
  • 4 cups (950 ml) fresh bread in bite size pieces
  • 1 tsp (5 ml). salt
  • 1 tsp (5 ml). basil
  • 1/2 tsp (2 ml). pepper
  • 2 14 oz (392 grm). cans diced or sliced tomatoes
  • 4 tsp (20 ml). brown sugar
Preparation
  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees (200 C.).
  • In medium saucepan cook onion in butter till tender.
  • Stir in salt, basil, pepper and bread pieces.
  • Mix in tomatoes and sugar.
  • Mix well, and put in a lightly greased 1-1/2 quarts (1425 ml) casserole.
  • Bake 30 minutes or till hot and bubbly.

I adjusted this recipe every time I made it till I was satisfied it was just right for us.
