Pfeffenusse (peppernuts)


Serves/Makes:3 Dozen

  • 2 cups (475 ml) sifted flour
  • 3/4 tsp (4 ml). cardamom
  • 3/4 tsp (4 ml). baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp (4 ml). allspice
  • 3/4 tsp (4 ml). salt
  • 3/4 tsp (4 ml). mace
  • 3/4 tsp (4 ml). baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp (1 ml). black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp (1 ml). ground anise seed
  • 1 cup (225 ml) honey
  • 3 Tbsp (45 ml). shortening
  • 1 egg
  • Sift dry ingredients.
  • Heat the honey, but do not boil.
  • Add shortening: cool.
  • Beat in the egg.
  • Stir in dry ingredients just until blended.
  • Let dough stand 10 minutes to stiffen enough to handle.
  • Shape into 1/2" balls.
  • Place on greased cookie sheet.
  • Bake at 350 degrees (175 C.), 12 to 13 minutes.
  • Cool cookies.
  • Frost with Powdered Sugar Frosting
  • Store in airtight container to ripen.
